Key Responsibilities
The incumbent will serve as a Certified Registered Nurse
Practitioner for the Primary Care at the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center and may
perform other duties as assigned. Duties of this position include, but are not
limited to the following:
He/she will perform complete, detailed and accurate health
histories, review patient records, develop comprehensive medical and nursing
status reports; order laboratory, radiological and diagnostic studies
appropriate for complaint, age, race, sex and physical condition of the
patient. He/she arranges inpatient admissions, transfers and discharges
inaccordance with established guidelines/standards developed within the
collaborative practice and completes forms pertinent to patients medical
record.
He/she performs comprehensive physical examinations and
assessments.He/she interprets and analyzes patient data results of laboratory
anddiagnostic tests. He/she will formulate medical and nursing diagnoses and
institute therapy or referrals of patients to the appropriate health care
facilities, agencies; and other resources of the community or physician. He/she
will plan and initiate a therapeutic regimen which includes ordering
medication, medical devices, nutrition and supportive services, and initiate
corrective measures, treatment and/or appropriate stabilization in emergency
situations. He/she will provide instructions and guidance regarding health
careand health care promotion to patients/family/ significant other. He/she
will works autonomously as well as in collaboration with a variety of
individuals to diagnosis and manage health care problems for patients; by serve
as a healthcare resource, interdisciplinary consultants, and patient advocates.
Qualifications
Citizen of the United States.
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the
appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following
accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting
Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a
graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto
Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of
professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted
registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of
professional nursing.
Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Applicants must meet physical standards for the position
described in VA Directive and Handbook 5019. A physical examination prior to
placement is required.
This is a drug testing designated position. Employees in drug testing designated
positions will be subject to random drug testing.
Must possess and maintain full and current certification as
a Nurse Practitioner from the American Nurses Association or other nationally
recognized certifying body. [The
certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being
appointed or selected.
National certification as a Certified Registered Nurse
Practitioner in area of practice with prescriptive authority required.
Applicant's education and length of nursing practice
(experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in
determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected. Experience as a RN
will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of
quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice,
Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension
of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA
Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows: Practice: practice, ethics and
resource utilization, Professional Development: performance, education/career
development, Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality, Scientific Inquiry:
quality of care, research.
